Algeria: Hiking the Atlas Tour

Often overlooked by travellers, the former French colony of Algeria is packed with layer upon layer of rich history. This richness can be seen in its ancient Numidian Pyramids, well-preserved Roman Ruins, and its European-styled capital of Algiers. All of these blend with the North African culture that has existed here for thousands of years to create a country unlike any other.

Itinerary

  1. Day One, Apr 27 2026

    Arrival in Algiers

    • Arrive in the Europeanesque capital Algiers.

    • Meet our guide at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

    • Take the rest of the day to explore the city. Stroll through some charming neighbourhoods, enjoy dinner in a local restaurant or check out the many monuments.

  2. Day Two, Apr 28 2026

    Djemila and Timgad

    • Today we venture to Djémila: the finest Roman ruins in North Africa—perhaps the world. These are the most well-preserved Roman ruins built in a mountainous environment.

    • Spend a few hours here taking in the mountain scenery and getting up close and personal with the ruins. There are almost no other tourists around!

    • After the ruins, we’ll drive to Timgad and stay overnight.

  3. Day Three, Apr 29 2026

    Djebel Chelia

    • In the morning, we will depart for the Aures Mountains, where we will find the second-highest mountain in Algeria – Djebel Chelia at 2,328 metres above sea level.

    • We will spend the day hiking up to the summit of Djebel Chelia, immersed in the historically important mountains that housed the beginning of the Algerian Independence Movement. The duration of the hike will be around 15kms with an elevation gain of approximately 500m. The path is a well-maintained track all the way to the top.

    • Once we complete the hike, we will be transferred back to Timgad, where we will stay overnight.

  4. Day Four, Apr 30 2026

    Timgad

    • After breakfast, we will visit the Roman ruins of Timgad, founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan approximately in 100AD. This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982 and is considered to be one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world.

    • After lunch, we will embark on our way to Constantine and stop in the Medghacen Royal Mausoleum on the way.

    • Upon arrival in Constantine, we will check into the hotel and go for dinner.

    • Overnight in Constantine.

  5. Day Five, May 1 2026

    Constantine

    • Today, we will take a tour of Constantine. A fascinating city built around various spectacular gorges. Bridges crisscross these giant chasms, giving us the best views of Constantine’s old town and quaint architecture.

    • If the weather permits, we will visit the floor of the famous Constantine gorge for a small walk of approximately 1 hour.

    • After the tour, we will drive to our hotel for the night in the Tikjda Touristic Complex in Djurdjura National Park.

  6. Day Six, May 2 2026

    Djurdjura National Park

    • In the morning, we will visit Winfred Muller Nature Museum to learn about the ecosystem, flora and fauna of the region.

    • We will then experience local life in Assouel – a place where the Kabylian Berbers go to spend the day at leisure, having barbecues and riding horses.

    • Next, we will take a short hike in Djebel Tikjda to warm up for our full day hike the next day. The hike will not be challenging; it is approximately 7km in distance and 450m in elevation gain. Most of the path is in good condition underfoot, with the exception of some short, steeper stretches.

    • After the hike, we will continue to Tala N Yilef, where we will stay overnight.
  7. Day Seven, May 3 2026

    Lac Agoulmim

    • Today we will experience Djurdjura National Park in all its splendour, spending the whole day hiking.

    • The hike will traverse the national park from north to south, starting in Tala N Yilef and finishing in Chalet du Kef. The difficulty will be moderate with some steep gradients at times and rough, small paths. The duration is expected to be 7-9 hours (approximately 19km with 1,000m elevation gain). The path is a mixture of well-established footpaths, some short sections are steeper and off-piste and once up in the traverse, the path might have some loose gravel underfoot with narrow paths and aerial views.

    • Along the way, we will experience the Algerian Atlas diversity, going from pine tree forests to rugged bare peaks and Alpine Lake Agoulmim. We will also be able to hike along the endemic Barbary macaques in their natural environment and birds of prey are also prevalent among the high peaks.

    • At the end of the hike, we will transfer back to Tikjda Touristic Complex for the night.

    • Overnight in Algiers.
