Situated on the eastern half of the Indonesian island of Timor, Timor-Leste (often referred to as East Timor), is a country that few have heard of, let alone visited. An independent country since 2002, formerly colonised by the Portuguese, Timor-Leste’s history stretches back to 42,000 year-old archeological remains found on its eastern tip. The country is a welcoming, friendly, tropical paradise, surrounded by clear waters and with a lush green interior punctuated by traditional ways of life and the occasional relic of World War II.
View Timor Leste toursOur tour begins in the capital, Dili, with a first day that spans visits to the Motael Church, the Resistance Archive Museum, and a stroll through the fruit and veg market before watching the sun go down from Areia Branca beach. The tour will also take in scenic coastal and mountain drives, visit a paradisiacal island via fishing boat and see traditional ways of life alongside historical WWII sites. The opportunity to climb Mr Ramelau at sunrise and take part in the country’s National Youth Day completes a trip through a lesser visited island gem.
