Often overlooked by travellers, the former French colony of Algeria is packed with layer upon layer of rich history. This richness can be seen in its ancient Numidian Pyramids, well-preserved Roman Ruins, and its European-styled capital of Algiers. All of these blend with the North African culture that has existed here for thousands of years to create a country unlike any other.

Itinerary

  1. Day One, May 3 2026

    Arrival in Constantine

    • Those only taking the Tamanrasset extension arrive in Constantine at any time before 18:30.

    • Overnight in Tamanrasset.

    Assekrem

    • After breakfast, we will start our journey to the Ahaggar National Park, stopping in Mount Hoggar for a scenic photo opportunity.

    • Next, we head to the Afilal Guelta for a leisurely walk along the oasis for approximately 2 hours. Depending on the water level of Afilal, we will have the opportunity to swim in the oasis.

    • We will then continue to Assekrem, where we will hike up to Charles de Foucauld Hermitage to see the sunset. This is also a small hike uphill for approximately 30 minutes. We will then have a tour of the hermitage by one of the resident monks.

    • We will spend the day climbing Mount Tahat, 3,003 metres above sea level. The climb is not technical but moderate to challenging. The gradient gets steeper and steeper the closer we get to the summit and the paths are not clearly marked. The duration is expected to be approximately 7 hours with plenty of breaks to enjoy the surrounding views.

    • After we finish the climb, we will continue to a dried guelta to wild camp for the night with views of the imposing Ilamane mountain. We will experience the desert starry night and if we are lucky, even the Milky Way.
