The Gerewol Festival is a celebration for the semi-nomadic Wodaabe people. This event is filled with feasting, dancing and finding lovers!

Itinerary

  1. Day One, Sep 23 2026

    Arrive in Niamey

    • Arrive in Niamey, Niger’s capital, then transfer to the hotel.

    • Depending on the arrival time, we may enjoy a short city tour to discover the National Museum, local monuments, and bustling markets.

    • In the evening, enjoy a beautiful sunset and dinner at Camp Banga, a charming riverside restaurant.

    • Overnight in Niamey.

  2. Day Two, Sep 24 2026

    Dosso

    After breakfast, we will depart for Dosso, homeland of the Zarma people, Niger’s secondlargest ethnic group. On the way, stop at Kouré to see the famous West African giraffes (Peralta), known for their lightcolored skin and remarkable height. 

    Upon arrival in Dosso, visit the Sultan’s Palace (Zarmakoy), the traditional and religious centre of Zarma culture. Explore the granaries, round houses, and lively markets that showcase their traditional way of life.

  3. Day Three, Sep 25 2026

    Tahoua

    Today, we head to Tahoua, a crossroads of Hausa, Tuareg and Fulani cultures. The Hausa, Niger’s largest ethnic group, are renowned for their colourful architecture and traditional attire. 

    Along the route, admire Sahelianstyle villages and mudbrick granaries.

  4. Day Four, Sep 26 2026

    Journey to Agadez

    Early morning departure for the legendary desert city of Agadez, home of the Tuareg people, known as the “Blue Men of the Desert.” 

    En route, visit the Tuareg and Arab villages to observe their nomadic lifestyle and unique round tents. Arrive in Agadez, the “Gateway to the Sahara”.

  5. Day Five, Sep 27 2026

    Explore Agadez

    • Today, we will spend a full day exploring Agadez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013. Founded in the 11th century and flourishing in the 15th century as the capital of the Sultanate of Aïr, Agadez remains a symbol of Saharan culture.

    Visit the Great Mosque, famous for its 27-meter mud-brick minaret, the tallest of its kind in the world. Continue to the Sultan’s Palace, where a meeting with the Sultan may be possible! Explore the old town, Henry Barth’s House and the local handicraft centre.

    • Overnight in Agadez.

  6. Day Six, Sep 28 2026

    Gerewol Festival Begins

    Experience one of Africa’s most colourful and joyful cultural events, the Gerewol Festival, celebrated annually by the Wodaabe (Bororo) Fulani people.

    • This festival brings together Fulani clans from across Niger to mark the end of the rainy season. Men decorate themselves with feathers, beads and intricate facial designs, showcasing their beauty and endurance through
    music and the traditional Yaake dance. These two days will be spent fully immersed in Fulani traditions, hospitality and music.

  7. Day Seven, Sep 29 2026

    Gerewol Festival Continues

    • We will spend another full day taking in and experiencing the celebrations and activities of the festival.

    • Overnight camping.

  8. Day Eight, Sep 30 2026

    Konni

    After breakfast and heartfelt farewells to our Fulani hosts, we will drive to Yama’a village to visit its historic mosque, built in 1962 by the selftaught architect Falké Barmou, recipient of the Aga Khan Award in 1986.

    • Here we will meet the locals, take photographs and learn about Hausa architecture and culture.

    • We then continue to Konni, a major trading hub between Hausa, Tuareg, and Fulani communities, well known for its delicious tchoukou cheese. 

    • Overnight in Konni.

  9. Day Nine, Oct 1 2026

    Niamey

    Today, we will head back to Niamey, passing through scenic Hausa villages, millet and sorghum fields and the lush landscapes of the savannah.

    • We stop briefly in Dosso for a group photo at the Sultan’s Palace before continuing to Niamey.

    • In the evening, enjoy dinner with live local music in one of the capital’s best restaurants. 

    • Overnight in Niamey.

  10. Day Ten, Oct 2 2026

    Niamey Tour

    We will spend the day discovering Niamey’s main cultural and natural highlights.

    • Visit the Grand Mosque, local markets and artisan centres for traditional crafts and souvenirs.

    • In the afternoon, we embark on a river cruise along the Niger River to observe hippos and visit a traditional fishing village.

    • Overnight in Niamey.

  11. Day Eleven, Oct 3 2026

    Tour Ends

    • Today, the tour ends, and we transfer to the airport for departing flights.
