Join us on a journey to the other worldly Danakil Depression
Itinerary
-
Day One, Oct 30 2026 Semera
• Our tour leader will be waiting to meet the group at the Ethiopian Airways check-in desk in the Domestic Terminal (flight not included). Before boarding the flight, we’ll have a short welcome briefing.
• Upon arrival in Semera, we will transfer to the hotel where we’ll spend the night at leisure.
-
Day Two, Oct 31 2026 Erta Ale Volcano
• In the morning, we’ll meet our local guide and drivers and head to the town of Dodom at the base of Erta Ale Volcano. We will drive 80km, crossing through landscapes of solidified lava, rock, sand and the occasional palm-lined oases. We will also pass through several small desert villages before reaching the town.
• In the late afternoon, we will trek to the summit of the volcano. We’ll spend an unforgettable time watching the spectacular sight of the boiling lava lake (depending on current levels, as sometimes it’s not high enough to see) before heading down to our camp to sleep.
-
Day Three, Nov 1 2026 Into the Danakil Depression
• After breakfast, we’ll drive to Lake Giulietti, a saltwater lake located more than 100 meters below sea level in one of the deepest depressions of the planet.
• We will then begin our journey to Hamed Ela, a village of 500 people, and further into the Danakil Depression. We descend to points of the desert that reach 328ft below sea level.
• En route, we pass through the small town of Erbiti, where the camel caravans stop, before proceeding to the Northern highlands. Along this route, we may see the camel caravans travelling to the salt mines, whilst others are heading out of the Danakil with their salt-loaded camels.
• Camp overnight at Hamed Ela.
-
Day Four, Nov 2 2026 Ragad Salt Mines/Dallol
• In the morning, we will drive to Ragad, the place where the salts are mined. If we’re lucky, we may get to see the salt being broken from the ground and cut into rectangular pieces before being loaded onto camels.
• We then drive onward to Dallol to visit the various landscapes formed by volcanic activity. Dallol is 380ft below sea level and is one of the lowest places in the world. We will also pass Lake Assal and more camel caravans before going walking with the Afar people.
• Afterwards, we will drive back to Semera via Hamed Ela and will be transferred directly to the airport, ready for the Ethiopian Airways flight to Addis (flight not included). Here, your tour ends, unless you are taking our Ethiopia/Somaliland tour, which will continue as per the itinerary.
