Taking up roughly a third of the island of Hispaniola and bordered by the Dominican Republic, the Republic of Haiti is the largest Caribbean country by population (approx 11.4 million) and third largest by area. The mountainous island nation is steeped in a remarkable history, notably the Haitian Revolution, which is widely recognised as the only slave revolt in history to both permanently overthrow colonial rule and establish a sovereign state.
View Haiti toursOur short, four day tour concentrates on the north of the country and takes in some of Haiti’s impressive historical sites, as well as exploring the French Colonial-influenced port city of Cap-Haitien and the idyllic, tropical surrounds of Amiga Island and Cadras Beach. Standout highlights include the 19th Century fortress, La Ferriere Citadelle, perched on a mountaintop overlooking the town of Milot, and the nearby remains of Sans-Souci Palace, the former residence of Henri Christophe (Henry I, King of Haiti). Both are stunning UNESCO World Heritage sites and iconic symbols of Haitian identity.
Visits to Bois-Caïman and Vertieres – the former where enslaved Africans originally gathered and planned the revolution and the latter the site of its final battle – provide further fascinating historical context, as does a stop off at the city of Fort-Liberté. It was here on 29 November 1803 that the nation’s independence was first declared.
